Fallout3 or Oblivion
I have only allotted myself so much money for games this semester, and so much time. I need some legit opinions here - Fallout 3 or Oblivion, or, do I forgo another game and buy both?
I loved Morrowind. I enjoyed walking around, and despite the graphics, the game had so many people, so many quests, and was so damn large that immersion was pretty easy - after 5 hours of play I was locked in.
I've read a lot of reviews on each - the fast travel shit in Oblivion turns me off, but it's so damn pretty, and apparently a lot larger. Fallout 3 has apparently better combat, and is somehow more immersive, but god it looks depressing, but it has a large edge in terms of NPCs and general polish.
WTB opinions.

Never played Fallout.
But I did play Morrowind and Oblivion. Oblivion is not as fun as Morrowind because you are not free...In Morrowind is was fun to steal, to taunt the guards, to kill the guards and to flee from the town, but in Oblivion...you cannot do such things...stealing someone is annoying and I don't recall the ability to taunt.
I could go on and on about the things that I didn't like in Oblivion (no levitation xD)...But it was fun and the graphics were amazing.

I have both and I'd say I like Oblivion more because of the theme and stuff, they are generally the exact same game so.. post apocalyptic or the old fantasy theme, your choice. In Fallout 3 though you can dismember people's body parts, which is something I really wish Oblivion had, would be priceless decapitating people with giant axes and stuff.
I don't recall you *having* to fast travel in Oblivion though, in fact I don't think I even knew you could for a while. You can definitely walk to where ever you want.. just takes a million years and fighting wolves every 5 seconds out in the wilderness is annoying.
No doubt though, both games are great, Fallout 3 has some pretty awesome stuff but a blown up world of rubble and radiation really gets old fast. I still haven't beat it and I've had it for months, just cause I lost interest.
So for me Oblivion > Fallout 3 in the long run.

I enjoyed Fallout 3 more than Oblivion. It comes across as a more finished version of Oblivion, in a different world...with guns. It was more polished, and more linear, which I enjoyed.
Oblivion, however, seemed to have more to do. That, and the game doesn't end when you finish the main quest line. The scenery is less drab, but in Fallout the desolate wastes add to the atmosphere.
Fallout 3 is getting DLCs soon, I hope. It was fun. It's a little too easy, however. I say snag Fallout 3.
EDIT: VATS is the hottest thing in the world. It's worth buying Fallout 3 alone.

Agree with Grumpy. VATS is awesome. Fallout 3 is awesome. Combat is awesome. Plot is good, but ending sucks.
Depends, really, about what you love more about the game. Freedom to create a mage, warrior or an assassin? Oblivion. Bloody combat, more RPG choices (dialog), Karma system and VATS? Fallout 3.
Oh, and graphics are better in F3.

Ok so far I've been playing Fallout 3 for 3 days in a row non stop :O and I still want to play more.
I can't do that with Oblivion since I get bored in Oblivion all the time and it feels like I'm forcing my self to play more.

Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns. Oblivion is Morrowind except a steaming pile of shit.
Don't waste your money; buy something good. If you really must play shitty games, get them for free. From friends or something. No illegal stuff. Because that's bad.

yup, the story may be linear, but you only explore like 10% of the world if you only do your storyline quests ^^
and not so linear cos you get 3 endings, scapecoat ftw
FallOut3 > Oblivian imo

After getting fallout 3 i am liking it more than oblivion, i never really got anywhere with oblivion, the balance system sucked and took alot away from it, but fallout is awsome, much better fighting and alot less glitchy.
And btw both games have fast travel.

The only bethseda game I finished was morrowind, and I regretted it. I didn't finish oblivion and didn't even get FO3.
So your best option IMO would be to forget both and spend your money someplace better. Eventually they will go down in price and you can get them in the bargin bin.

fallout 3 was more enjoyable for above reasons...
theyre both good, just buy fallout first because its the better game. if you get sick of blowing up super mutant's heads then go cast fireballs at some grey skinned weird lookin' dudes in oblivion for a change
i personally didnt like the VATS system in fallout though. it basically turns a shooter into a turn based exploration game where you dont have to aim or think fast. sure, you can just -not use it-, but they give you ammo based on if you used vats all the time. so if you run and gun and dont use vats you have to carry a melee weapon for when you run out of ammo...which is more often than i like

um, Fallout is supposed to be a turn based exploration game, not a shooter, that is why vats is there.

Yeah, well the ''turn'' is only for you, blowing somethings head off more than likely, It's really boring and repetitive so I didn't use it, I just used cheats because they're the same as in Oblivion for PC.

MODSMODSMODSMODSMODSMODSMODSMODSMODSMODSMODS
Seriously, mods make Oblivion so much better.
I haven't played FO3, because I generally don't like guns. I'd like to try it, but no one I know has it
So yeah, I'd say Oblivion <_<

Meh. Oblivion is fun with mods, that's true.
But Fallout 3 without mods is even more fun. Level 30 mod makes it EVEN MORE fun. And I can't imagine how fun it is with the level editor. This will mean mods will be more advanced, more quests, more weapons, re-balance mods... Awesomeness.

Fallout 3 also has 3dogs, which is a win by default. Although, why not get 'em both? Oblivion is cheap and Fallout is on sale.
May steel be with you.
